PIX11 NYC: Oral Health and Menopause: What Every Woman Needs to Know

When it comes to women’s health, menopause is often associated with hot flashes, sleep changes, and mood shifts—but there’s one area that doesn’t get enough attention: oral health.

PIX11 - Research shows that the hormonal changes during and after menopause can have a major impact on the health of your mouth, teeth, and gums. Dry mouth, receding gum lines, tooth sensitivity, bleeding gums, and even changes in taste are just some of the symptoms women may experience. Left unchecked, these issues can lead to more serious conditions like gum disease and tooth decay.

Sarah Chavarria, CEO and President of Delta Dental Insurance Company, explains that dentists and hygienists are often the first line of defense and can provide valuable guidance. Yet, many providers wait for patients to raise the topic—making it critical for women to feel comfortable asking questions and sharing concerns.

A recent survey from Delta Dental revealed:

  • 83% of women said they plan to prioritize scheduling their next dental visit after learning more about the menopause–oral health connection.
  • 74% of women 40+ said a better understanding of oral health would encourage them to talk openly with their dentist about menopause.
  • 59% of women reported they’d maintain better home care if they received more personalized reminders or education between visits.
