  • Why we created Next Stage™ Women’s Health

Hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause affect oral health. Pregnancy can cause gingivitis, while menopause lowers estrogen, leading to gum disease and tooth loss. Many women are unaware of this connection.

Our  2025 survey shows 81% of dentists would discuss menopause-related oral health more if menopause-specific benefits were available. Next Stage™ Women’s Health offers enhanced coverage for pregnancy and menopause, helping women connect oral, hormonal and overall health, and encouraging specialized care during these key life stages. According to our  2024 Menopause Survey, over 80% of women 40+ say they’d maintain better oral care with additional dental benefits.

Frequently asked questions

The Next Stage™ Women’s Health program recognizes the unique care that these conditions require by offering tailored benefits, as well as comprehensive support and education to enhance women’s overall well-being during these pivotal life stages.

When a member opts in to the Next Stage™ Women’s Health program, the following teeth and gum cleaning procedures are covered at 100% each group plan year. These benefits are effective 24 hours after opting in to the program.

Enhanced dental benefits for pregnancy and menopause:

  • 2 additional oral exams (up to 4 in the group’s plan year)
  • 1 additional set of X-rays (bitewings)
  • 2 topical applications of fluoride — for adults

Members will need to log in to their online account and complete an information form that includes designating their condition of either pregnancy or menopause and providing their physician’s contact information.

Many Delta Dental PPO™ employer-sponsored plans include general pregnancy health benefits that are still available to members. However, opting in to the Next Stage™ Women’s Health program offers pregnant members more comprehensive care. The Next Stage™ Women’s Health program provides more robust benefits than the standard pregnancy benefit. If members choose to opt in to the Next Stage™ Women’s Health program, these benefits will replace the standard additional pregnancy benefit in your plan.

Women’s health needs require specialized support during pivotal life stages such as pregnancy and menopause, which bring unique health challenges including hormonal changes that impact oral health and overall health. Dentists and dental hygienists are in a unique position to help improve women’s oral and overall health through oral health education, preventive treatments and early detection of oral health changes. Through the expanded benefits of the Next Stage™ Women’s Health program, providers can do more to help improve patient well-being and satisfaction.
