In the summertime, we’re all out in high ultraviolet (UV) index conditions. We'll throw on some sunscreen, a hat and whichever sunglasses are close at hand. But are those glasses providing the UV protection we need? The summer months — or any months really — are a great time to talk to your clients about the sun's rays and how the right vision coverage can help protect their employees' eye health.
 

Keep awareness high while the UV is high

Safeguarding our eyes from ultraviolet (UV) exposure helps prevent cataracts, eye cancer and glaucoma.  Here are a few best practices that your clients and their employees can abide by to keep eyes healthy:
 

• Limiting the amount of time spent outdoors on high UV index days.
• Watching the index all year — snowy, icy days can have high indices too.
• Wearing hats to protect what glasses can't.
• Ensuring sunglasses have a UV-protectant layer and that they fit firmly and comfortably on the face.
   

Vision problems cost $575 billion in lost productivity annually. By offering vision coverage that provides UV protection, like DeltaVision®, your clients can support their employees eye health.
 

How DeltaVision offers UV protection

All DeltaVision plans offer UV coating for lenses at a small fixed copay. Plus, there are plan options that include coverage for both prescription and non-prescription UV-protectant sunglasses. Clients whose employees spend considerable periods of time outdoors (e.g. landscaping, construction, etc.) may find this coverage extra helpful because it can protect eye health and employees' ability to do their jobs.

Coverage includes an annual WellVision Exam®, which can detect damage caused by UV rays. In addition, enrollees get access to VSP's network of independent eye care providers, which is the largest in the United States. That means they can easily access care from a qualified doctor in their area.
