PPO plans: You’ll pay a percentage of the dentist’s fee for covered services. Deductibles and waiting periods apply (the Protect Propel plan has no waiting periods), except for preventive services.


DeltaCare USA plan: For this plan, you’ll pay a fixed dollar amount for each covered service. Coverage only applies when you visit a DeltaCare USA general dentist at your selected primary care facility (referral required to see a specialist). There are no deductibles or waiting periods.

  • PPO plans (Delta Dental PPO) let you see any dentist (you’ll likely save more at PPO network dentists). You’ll pay a percentage of dentist fees (coinsurance), and deductibles and waiting periods may apply for some services. 
  • DeltaCare USA Essential plan requires that you choose a primary care dentist. You pay set dollar amounts (copayments) for covered services, and there are no deductibles or waiting periods.

  • PPO (Delta Dental PPO): You pay coinsurance (a percentage of dentist fees), and some services have deductibles and annual maximums. No waiting period for preventive services, but major services may have a waiting period. You can visit any dentist, no referrals required, though you’ll likely save more at PPO network dentists.
  • DeltaCare USA Essential: You pay fixed copayments (set dollar amounts) for covered services. The plan has no deductibles, annual maximums or waiting periods. You must use a DeltaCare USA dentist and get referrals for specialist care.

Yes! If you need dental care while traveling, PPO plans offer more flexible coverage, since you can visit any dentist and you have access to a broad network nationwide. With the DeltaCare USA plan, if you’re traveling and can’t visit your chosen primary care dentist, you’re only covered for emergency treatment. Absolutely. All plans emphasize preventive dental care by covering exams, cleanings and x‑rays, often with low or no out‑of‑pocket cost. With coverage for preventive care, you may be more motivated to get regular check-ups, which could help reduce dental pain, avoid costly problems later and maintain your overall health over time.

  1. Covering a single enrollee in NV, OH and WA.
  2. There are no waiting periods for plans in California as of January 1, 2025.
  3. Covering a single enrollee in OH.
  4. The Protect Propel plan begins paying for orthodontic services in year 3. A separate deductible and lifetime maximum apply to these services. For details, review the Certificate of Coverage.
  5. Year 4 annual maximum for the PPO Propel plan is $1,750 in the following states: CA, DE, IL, ND, PR, UT, VI and WA.
  6. Covering a single enrollee in NY. Prices vary by plan type, location, number of dependents and payment frequency.
  7. The percentage you pay for services under the Protect Propel plan decreases over four years. If you terminate the Protect Propel plan in a future year and then enroll again afterward, your benefits will start over at year 1 levels.
  8. TMJ treatment is only covered under the Protect Propel plan if you live in Minnesota, New Mexico or New York.
