Vision care: how it can save lives

When you think about going to the eye doctor, you usually think about reading an eye chart and getting a prescription for glasses or contact lenses. But eye care is closely tied to overall health. In addition to dental coverage, Delta Dental offers DeltaVision® for access to eye care for your employees that can detect not only eye diseases but a range of other conditions affecting the entire body.

Why vision coverage?

Routine eye exams can reveal early signs of vision loss and other vision issues, such as cataracts, conjunctivitis and glaucoma. But eye doctors can also find symptoms of other serious health issues, such as:

  • Diabetes, which can affect retinal blood vessels or cause diabetic retinopathy
  • Hypertension, sometimes seen as retinal vessel damage or bleeding
  • High cholesterol, which may show as deposits or rings around the cornea
  • Autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis through eye inflammation like uveitis
  • Brain or neurologic problems, through optic nerve swelling or problems with the pupil or overall vision

Many Americans already believe that eye health is just as important as their heart health. It turns out that the right vision coverage can in fact save lives.

How often employees should get eye exams

Since vision disability is one of the top 10 disabilities of those 18 years or older, a yearly comprehensive eye exam is just as important to your health as an annual physical, according to the American Optometric Association.

Many vision issues are preventable and help preserve eye health. That makes it vital that your employees see a doctor of optometry for a comprehensive eye exam at least once per year. Especially because it is the only way to visualize the blood vessels behind the eyes without an X-ray, CT scan or invasive surgery.
