Dental coverage options to help your employees smile on

You know that dental benefits are important for your employees’ oral and overall health. However, for employees transitioning into retirement, or for those in part-time, seasonal, contract or furloughed roles, finding dental coverage on their own can be challenging.

To help, Delta Dental offers a variety of resources to explain the individual and family dental coverage options available to employees who leave the company or are ineligible for a group plan.

Individual plans offer employees flexibility and convenience:

  • Options for coverage levels: With many options available, employees and retirees can choose the coverage and cost that's right for them and their families.
  • Purchase any time: No need to wait for open enrollment — many individual plans are available to buy any time, such as Delta Dental's individual and family plans or plan options exclusively for AARP members.

Employees should be aware that individual plans differ from group plans in several ways:

  • Direct pay. Employees will pay premiums directly to Delta Dental.
  • Waiting periods. An individual plan may have waiting periods for certain services.
  • Benefits: Individual plans may have coverage levels that differ from their previous employer plan. Employees should review benefit details carefully to select the right plan for their needs.

Here’s what’s available:

Individual plans

  • Individual and Family plans. Employees can choose coverage that suits their needs and purchase directly from Delta Dental online or by phone. Plans are offered in AL, CA, DE, FL, GA, LA, MD, MS, MT, NV, NY, PA, TX, UT, WV and DC.
  • Plans designed for AARP members. AARP members have exclusive plan offerings to choose from. Anyone can become an AARP member at the time of enrollment. Plans are offered nationwide, including Washington D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Other options

These dental coverage options have specific enrollment timelines and eligibility requirements. They may not be available to all your employees.

  • Health Care Exchange plans. Delta Dental offers plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace, also known as the Health Care Exchange.
  • Medicare Advantage plans. While original Medicare doesn't cover most dental care, employees or retirees that are eligible can purchase a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan that includes dental coverage.
  • COBRA. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, or COBRA, is a federal law that allows continuation of an existing dental plan post-employment.
